After its original water treatment plant was reduced to 0.75 MGD, the Town of Silt, Colorado, and its owner’s advisor, Zancanella and Associates, Inc., selected Garney to deliver a new 2.0-MGD facility using a CMAR approach. Designed by Dewberry, the upgraded plant increases treatment capacity, improves system reliability, and helps Silt meet the needs of its community.
Through effective cost management and unused contingencies, Garney saved the Town approximately $1 million, allowing those funds to be redirected to other community needs. The project also preserved key parts of the existing system, including the 30,000-gallon clearwell, while bringing new treatment processes online.
Solutions
Plant Reuse and Integration: Disruption was minimized by repurposing parts of the existing plant for distribution and keeping the 30,000-gallon clearwell in operation. Garney coordinated electrical, controls, and system connections between the existing and new facilities to support the upgraded treatment processes.
Conventional Water Treatment: The treatment process includes Actiflo pretreatment, sedimentation basins with plate settlers, and media filtration using greensand, anthracite, and filter sand. Together, these steps improve water quality by reducing turbidity and removing iron and manganese.
Rural Collaborative Delivery: The project used a CMAR approach built around transparency, cost control, and community engagement. Located far from major metropolitan areas, the team prioritized local subcontractor participation to support the regional economy while delivering Silt’s first CMAR project.
Project Status
The project is complete, and the new 2.0-MGD water treatment plant is operational. The facility now provides reliable capacity and improved water quality for the Town of Silt, using modern treatment technologies and upgraded infrastructure to support current community needs.
