At Vanderbilt University, Garney is delivering underground utility work as part of a $200M+ campus and infrastructure upgrade led by Brasfield & Gorrie. The project includes new thermal piping, electrical duct banks, domestic water, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer systems, connecting a new power plant to dorms, academic buildings, and other facilities. Garney is completing complex utility work in congested corridors with century-old infrastructure keeping the project on schedule.
The upgraded utility network will increase Vanderbilt’s energy efficiency, system redundancy, and capacity for campus expansion. Reliable service connections between the new power plant and core facilities, along with upgraded water lines and storm and sanitary systems, will provide lasting benefits for both the university and surrounding neighborhoods.
Solutions
BIM Coordination: Modeled existing and new utilities to eliminate conflicts in tight corridors.
Specialized Installations: Delivered pre-insulated steel thermal piping and large duct banks.
Public Infrastructure Integration: Separated storm and sanitary systems while upgrading domestic water lines alongside campus construction.
Maintaining Traffic: Used creative approaches, like utilizing smaller trucks and scheduling around the university’s event calendar, to minimize disruptions.
Project Status
Continue installing thermal piping and duct banks, finalize public utility upgrades, and complete testing and tie-ins to deliver expanded capacity, efficiency, and long-term reliability for Vanderbilt University’s campus and surrounding community, while preparing for the Central Neighborhood phase of the project.
