Combined High Service and Transfer Pump Station at Osage WTP

Amarillo, Texas – December 09 – The City of Amarillo awarded Garney a $15.4 million contract to construct the Combined High Service and Transfer Pump Station at Osage Water Treatment Plant project. The new pump station will provide both high service and transfer pumping functions for the water produced at the Osage WTP. The project includes the construction of a 45' deep concrete underground water storage tank and aboveground masonry pump station with both sets of pumps and 30" steel discharge piping, a new masonry electrical building, a concrete discharge meter vault and valve vault, an MSE retaining wall, chain link fencing, yard piping ranging from 4" to 64", and new surfaced roads with both asphalt and concrete paving. The project also includes all process mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing.

Pumping capacities for the high service portion of the pump station has four pumps at 1,500 HP each, with a total capacity of 60 MGD, and the transfer portion has two pumps at 1,500 HP each. All pumps are vertical turbine with a combination of VFD and soft start controls. Also included are three 2,000 KW standby generators capable of running two high service pumps and one transfer pump.

A significant challenge on this project will be the deep excavation of the new pump station. As the excavation will be 45' deep, Garney crews will use a beam and plate shoring system on three sides and an access ramp into the remaining side. Another challenging aspect will be the installation of part of the 64" PCCP yard pipe that ranges in depth from 15' to 50'. Traditional trench shoring systems will be used to safely install all yard piping.

The funding for this project is being provided entirely from stimulus monies provided by the Texas Water Development Board and the EPA. This is the first economic stimulus project for the City of Amarillo, which means the City is relying on Garney's expertise with these types of projects to provide all appropriate information and documentation. Work began on December 24, 2009 with the project scheduled to be complete well ahead of the contract completion date of May 2012.
